Prominent Female Lawyers In Ohio And Cleveland History

Ohio and Cleveland can be proud of many female lawyers who served as pioneers for women
lawyers today. Some prominent examples from history include these distinguished women:

	Nettie Cronise Lutes: Ohio’s 1st woman lawyer (admitted to the Ohio Bar in 1873)		Florence Cronise: Ohio’s 2nd female lawyer (admitted to the Ohio Bar in 1873)

Florence Ellinwood Allen: 1st female assistant county prosecutor in the United States (Assistant Prosecutor for Cuyahoga County, 1919-1921); 1st woman elected to a judicial office in Ohio (Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court, 1921-1922); 1st woman to be elected to the Supreme Court of Ohio (1922-1934); 1st woman to be appointed to a federal appeals court judgeship (United States Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit, 1934-1959)
	Mary B. Grossman: 1st female municipal court judge elected in the United States (Cleveland Municipal Court, 1923-1959)		Blanche Krupansky: 1st woman to serve on the Ohio Court of Appeals (1976-1981); 2nd woman to sit on the Ohio Supreme Court (1981-1983)
	Lillian W. Burke: 1st African American female judge appointed in Ohio (Cleveland Municipal Court in 1969-1987)		C. Ellen Connally: 1st African American female judge elected in Ohio (Cleveland Municipal Court, 1980-2003)
	Sara J. Harper: 1st African American woman to graduate from Case Western Reserve University School of Law; 1st woman to serve on the judiciary of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve; 1 of the first 2 women to sit on an Ohio Court of Appeals (8th District); 1st African American woman appointed to sit on the Ohio Supreme Court (1992); founded the Sara J. Harper Library in the early 1990s at Outhwaite on East 43rd Street; retired Board member of the Cuyahoga County Law Library Resources Board (2009-2012)		Stephanie Tubbs Jones: 1st African American woman to be elected to the Ohio House of Representatives (1999-2008); former employee of the Cleveland Law Library Association
	Betty Montgomery: 1st female Ohio Attorney General (1995-2003); 1st female Ohio Auditor of State (2003-2007)		Maureen O’Connor: 1st female chief justice of the Ohio Supreme Court (Elected Chief Justice 2010- )
	Kathleen B. Burke: 1st female OSBA President (1993); retired Board member of the Cleveland Law Library (2002-2009)		Colleen Conway Cooney: Retired Judge of the 8th District Court of Appeals and former Board Member of the Cleveland Law Library Association (2006-2009)
	Melody Stewart: First African-American woman elected to the Ohio Supreme Court and only the 12th woman to sit on the Ohio Supreme Court.
