EBOOKS: A BOLD, NEW FRONTIER
FOR OUR LAW LIBRARY

eBook

The Law Library has taken what we consider a bold, new step by purchasing five (5) eBooks from Lexis. Although Lexis offers an extensive list of eBook titles, including many related to Ohio law, we purchased the following five (5) titles as a beta test to gauge your interest and usage:

    Anderson’s Ohio Creditor’s Rights Manual
    Anderson’s Ohio Consumer Law Manual
Anderson’s Ohio Elder Law Practice Manual
    Ohio Workers’ Compensation
Employment in Ohio: A Guide to Employment Laws, Regulations and Practices

Depending on how you like these choices, we may consider adding more eBook titles in the future.

After considering all of our options, we chose to download our eBooks to existing laptops that we already own and currently loan to you.* We have also installed word processing software on our laptops that enables you to cut and paste text from our eBooks directly into documents that you are drafting. If you know how to create documents, you will be able to use our eBooks without a learning curve. Because our laptops are also enabled for wireless access, you can also email your documents or print them to your own wireless printers. Alternatively, you can use a flash drive or disk to transfer documents to another device first. As a result, our eBooks serve as a highly efficient version of a hard copy book that is checked out to someone else.

We hope that our current solution to eBooks is an interim step for us. Naturally, we would like to eventually purchase eBooks that we can directly circulate to you for use on your own portable devices and computers. However, Lexis and other legal publishers are still working on issues related to digital rights management (“DRM”) that would allow libraries like ours to loan eBooks directly to you by purely electronic means. When the vendors resolve those issues, we will be ready to make them available to you.

QR CODES®
AT THE LAW LIBRARY

Code

A QR code®, or Quick Response code, is a two-dimensional barcode containing various types of encoded information that is readable by smart phones. To make use of this technology, your phone must be capable of capturing the code with special barcode scanners, which can be found on the Internet (just Google ‘qr scanner’). At the Library, we plan to use them to direct our patrons to web pages, pdf files, pictures, or any number of applications. See for yourself. Just point your phone at the code above, and see where it takes you.

NEW CATALOG
INTERFACE

Catalog

If you have searched the Law Library’s catalog recently or have looked for a title through the CLEVNET website, you have encountered a new interface for the library’s web catalog. We sent out an email blast earlier this year when the new version of the catalog was first launched, but you may not have had an occasion to take a look at it yet. You can access the catalog by linking to it from our home page under “Library Catalogs,” or directly @ http://clelaw.bibliocommons.com.

This new catalog enables you to conduct Google-like searches or use the advanced search link, set up a personal user ID and password, or create lists of titles or bookshelves of items you or your firm have used. There are additional features available in the new catalog so if you wish to find out more, here are links to a few of the tutorials available about BiblioCommons:

Just this week, Cleveland Public Library released an update to our catalog which includes some enhancements to searching and account management. Here is a link to that tutorial: http://youtu.be/J-c8x_66R4s

It will also be linked to the catalog header for a while so it will be available when you access the catalog.

As always, if you have any questions about using the catalog or what the law library’s holdings for a particular title might be, contact us by email at lawlib@clelaw.lib.oh.us or by phone at (216) 861-5070.

LAW LIBRARY CREATES GOVERNANCE
AND STRATEGIC PLANNING COMMITTEES

Committee

You may have noticed that this Newsletter now bears the logos of both the Cleveland Law Library Association and the Cuyahoga County Law Library Resources Board. That is because both entities have created a successful partnership which continues to operate a Law Library that meets the needs of our combined private, judicial, and governmental patrons. To better facilitate this partnership, the boards of both entities have recently created joint committees on Governance and Strategic Planning. The primary goals of the Governance Committee will be to strengthen the boards’ leadership, provide advice on board member roles and responsibilities, nominate candidates for board positions, and address issues that arise related to joint operation of the Law Library. The primary goal of the Strategic Planning Committee will be to create a new vision for the Law Library that will guide us in the future and ensure that we can meet your expectations and the challenges of delivering legal reference and research services over the Internet. If you have any ideas that you would like to share with either committee, please send them to the Librarian at ksasala@clelaw.lib.oh.us or 216-861-5070.
