CUYAHOGA COUNTY COURTHOUSE
CENTENNIAL, 1912-2012 |
This year, the Cuyahoga County Courthouse is celebrating its 100th anniversary. Just over one hundred years ago on January 1, 1912, what we now call the ‘Old Courthouse’ was dedicated and opened for the administration of justice in Cuyahoga County. Cleveland was a building mecca back then because our Courthouse was actually part of a formal Group Plan developed by Daniel Burnham and others to create a large public space surrounded by various civil and government buildings designed in neoclassic style. The first building erected as part of this vision was the Metzenbaum Federal Courthouse in 1910. The ‘Old Courthouse’ with its Beaux Arts style architecture came next, followed by Cleveland City Hall in 1916, Public Auditorium in 1922, and the Cleveland Public Library’s Main building in 1925.
You may not be aware that our current Courthouse is actually the fifth building to house activities related to county government. The first Cuyahoga County Courthouse opened about 200 years ago circa 1812-1813 on the Northwest corner of Public Square. If you are interested in more detailed information about the history of the Courthouse, the Cleveland Bar Journal ran a series of articles in 1943 that describes each successive building and the most significant art and architectural features of the interior and exterior of the current facility. The Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association has graciously given Cuyahoga County permission to post these articles on the Centennial’s website, which can be found at the following address:
www.cuyahogacounty.us/en-US/County-Centennial-Celebration.aspx
This website also contains additional historical information, including a narrative history written by the County Archivist, a bibliography the Law Library Director prepared of significant cases decided in the Courthouse in 1912, and a list of Common Pleas Judges prior to 1912. The website also contains a photo gallery of the Courthouse, as well as special features devoted to its foyer, the marble staircase, the stained glass window of Lady Justice, the Law Library, and paintings throughout the building.
To kick-off a year long celebration of the Courthouse Centennial, a Committee chaired by Common Pleas Judge Nancy Fuerst held a press conference on January 12th, followed by a tour of the Courthouse and birthday cake. As part of the tour, visitors stopped at the Law Library, where they learned about our services and viewed the beautiful mural in our main room of a New England Town Meeting by locally-born artist Max Bohm.
The Committee is planning additional events throughout the year to celebrate the Centennial, including a discussion at the City Club in April and a Lecture Series to be held at the Courthouse featuring several speakers, including retired Cuyahoga County Architect Berj Shakarian, Cuyahoga County Archivist Dr. Judith G. Cetina, and Eighth District Appellate Court Judge Sean Gallagher. More information on these events will be posted soon on the website listed above.

LAW LIBRARY PUBLICATIONS
ARCHIVE & ORIGINAL CHARTER |
Inspired by this year’s Courthouse Centennial and the history of our building, we created a digital archive of our in-house publications. Our new web page provides access to all of our Newsletters back to 1986, our Law Library Briefs series from 2010, and our Lunch & Learn programs from 2011. If you are interested in nostalgia, the January 1986 Newsletter mentions the inauguration of the Law Library’s first online catalog and describes our Westlaw service at the time. Our new archive can be found at the following link: clevelandlawlibrary.org/Public/Misc/Newsletters.html
We have also scanned and posted the original Charter which created the Cleveland Law Library on December 18, 1869. Although this document is very old and written by hand, you can still read the language where the founding members gave the Law Library its first and continuing mission to exist “for the promotion of the science of the law.” If you are interested in reading our Charter, you can find it on this page on our website: clevelandlawlibrary.org/Public/misc/CLLA%20Charter.pdf
